The Catalina GP got off to a red hot, Red Bull start on Saturday, December 4th.
This small island, located a scant 26 miles from the Golden Coast of Southern California, held the first day of competition for what promises to be one of the best races in America. A wide variety of off road racers and race enthusiasts were on hand for this unique race. Vintage racers, desert racers, motocrossers, Grand Prix riders, and almost everyone in between, made it out to the legendary island for some super charged race action.
Along with the recent Pala Raceway 'Day In the Dirt' this event was a huge hit with large numbers of West Coast race fans and riders. The day started out, cool and overcast, with light sprinkles, but soon blossomed into a bright A-typical California sun drenched day. The track itself, was a mix of long, fast straights, with uphills, dropoffs, downhills, and a fun and challenging layout. There was literally something for everyone racing.
Spectators also turned out by the boatload, to view the exciting race action on Saturday. If you get a chance next year, jump on the Catalina Island Express and get out there and see who gets to claim the title of Catalina GP champ. Fun is assured.

Billy Hamill's Junior Speedway Academy
We can't say enough good things about what Doug Nicol and Billy Hamill are doing for the sport of American Speedway racing. A tip of the ORI visor to Martin Hagon, of Hagon shocks, as well, for donating the vehicles used for the Billy Hamill Junior Speedway Academy. This event lets future Speedway racers try out the sport, basically for free.
Billy Hamill's Junior Speedway Academy at San Bernadino's Inland Motorcycle Speedway at Orange Fairgrounds was a resounding success. This outstanding program is a result of Martin Hagon, of Hagon Shocks, who donated the machines, and Billy Hamill, Doug Nicol, and a dedicated crew of Speedway professionals, caring enough about their sport to give first time riders a free look at what racing Speedway is all about.
First time Speedway riders from 8-15, are offered Free Bikes, skid shoes and boots, to try their hands at Speedway racing at the Junior Speedway Academy. What a great way to get new blood into the sport. Billy Hamill and Doug Nicol's sons, lent their considerable skills to show what Speedway racing is all about.

T.J. Lavin Seriously Injured at Dew Tour Championship.
Noted BMX and X Games racer, T.J. Lavin was listed in critical condition after being injured during qualifying at the Dew Tour Championships in Las Vegas Thursday night (10/14/10). The 33-year-old Las Vegas native and host of MTV's "Real World/Road Rules Challenge" is in a coma in critical condition at the University Medical Center in Las Vegas.
Lavin was attempting a freestyle stunt at the event, but failed to get his feet back on the pedals before landing. He was thrown from his mxer and knocked unconscious. Lavin suffered a shattered wrist and multiple broken ribs. T.J. rose to fame on the BMX circuits, and had his best success in the early years of the X Games. He earned a silver medal in 1996, and gold medals in 1997 and '99. His main gig over the last few years was as the MTV host of the reality show "Real World/Road Rules Challenge." Our thoughts and prayers got out to T.J. and his family.
